This painting was done from a photo my friend gave me. She knew I love painting animals and that I wouldn't be able to resist painting this mother and baby.
This was a fun painting challenge from one of our Art Visions Gallery members. She thought it would be fun to have a painting challenge every so often to get us out of our comfort zone. Since I do not do still life paintings I was a bit intimidated, but found that I really had a fun time with this subject.
This time of year always seems to come around much too quickly. But as the year ends I want to thank everyone for your encouragement and support of my artwork. It has been another fun year painting and learning.
Warmest wishes for a peaceful and joyous Christmas and all the best in the New Year.
The shadows on the snow was what caught my eye for this painting. It always is so interesting to me to see all the colors that are reflected in snow; yet we always think of snow as being white.
While this is not a specific farm from my childhood, it is so typical of the landscape of my youth. I still love a morning walk in a fresh blanket of snow. Snow scenes are one of my favorite subjects to paint.
This is a painting of my granddaughter and a dear friend and fellow artist teaching her to kayak. This was a fun painting with all the vibrant colors of the kayaks. And, this is the end of my water series. I'm thinking snow for my next series, I just love painting snow.
This is my third painting in my water series paintings. I just had to try and capture the light and reflections of the fall colors. It was a really fun painting to paint. I'm finding a little more time to paint now that school is back in session. I'm not very disciplined in the summer to set aside time each day to paint.
It's almost time again for the Lynchburg Art Festival. Saturday, September 9 from 10am to 4pm at EC Glass High School in Lynchburg. This is always a fun event with lots of original art in all mediums, sizes and prices. I will be in Space # 50, please stop in and say hi.
Bar Harbor, Maine, one of my favorite vacation spots. This is a site that you can see at the end of the day when the lobster fishermen come into the town pier. I love watching them, you are sure the dock cannot accommodate another boat, but in comes another one and they just nose that boat in between two other boats and tie it up
Owasco Lake (one of the Fingers Lakes in NY State) is an area I have always loved. My family and I vacationed there this summer and even though the weather was cool and sometimes rainy, it was a wonderful getaway. This is a little painting I did on one of those stormy days. It was mostly done with a palette knife
This is a scene that can be seen on most any little trip here is the Southwest Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains or Upstate New York, where I am from. I just love passing by them and the farmers at work in the fields.
Art Show on Saturday April 29 10AM - 4PM downtown Lexington, VA at Hopkins Green. This is a great place to pick up some great original artwork. I will be at Pod #2, Panel C; please stop by and say hi. This is always a fun event with lots of artwork. Lexington is a beautiful little historic town.
This is a painting of my granddaughter, Hannah from a photo taken several years ago. We spent many hours at the swing in the back yard and the dress she is wearing was a flower girl dress that brought Hannah many hours of fun starting with Halloween and lasting many years. Lots of fond memories and lots of fun to paint.
This was a first for me, painting on aluminum. A friend gave me the panel to see how I liked painting on it; I decided to use a palette knife thinking the paint would adhere better on such a smooth surface. I loved doing it, the paint adhered very well. Since the weather is now more springlike, this will be the last of winter paintings for a while.
Since there is an abundance of deer in the community where I live, I decided to try and paint them. They were so much fun to paint, I just might try to do another painting of them.
The warm springlike weather we are having here in Virginia has made me want to paint some springtime paintings. Although it's not quite time for the baby lambs to be born, it will be very soon. Since I live close to the Booker T. Washington National Park, I always have to make a trip there to check out the new lambs and get some photos if they are close by.
Thank you to all who came out and supported Smith Mountain Good Neighbors and the arts. We had a wonderful turnout and sold lots of art. A very nice donation will be made to the Good Neighbors organization.

The show will feature fine art originals, prints, and note cards of fourteen local area members. Their willingness to participate is in response to what Good Neighbors does for the Smith Mountain Lake community.

Today I delivered several paintings to Bedford Landings Bed & Breakfast to be displayed there for the next few months. If you are out for a nice ride in the country stop in or book a room at this beautiful bed and breakfast. It is located right on the runway of Smith Mountain Lake Airport. Check out their blog:
Well I can't say my first painting of the year was inspired by the weather here in Virginia since I am snowed in with our first snow of the winter season. However, there is plenty of time for the snow to inspire me because it usually takes days before our road gets plowed :-( Anyway, spring training is only a little more than a month away so I am ready for it with a painting!
Life has kind of got in the way of my painting, but it has been spent making memories with my granddaughter and that is always fun. Painting this donkey was a fun change of pace.
Birds were among some of my very first oil paintings and they still are one of my favorite subjects to paint, and baby birds are at the top of favorite birds:-)
This is a little painting I did at a plein air painting class taught by Steve Doherty at Canandaigua Lake, NY (one of the Finger Lakes). This was the first class I had taken doing plein air and I was definitely out of my comfort zone; but was quite pleased with the results of my first plein air painting. While it is still a very big challenge to me, I do really enjoy being outside painting.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the Artisan Studio and Harvest Tour. We met lots of new people and got to see some friends we hadn't seen in a while. It was a great success and hope to see some of you again soon. Remember painting classes and art make great Christmas gifts.
Mark your calendars for a great studio tour this next weekend, October 15 & 16 10am to 5pm. Art Visions Gallery is No. 2 on the tour. Watch the artists at work; lots of new artwork will be displayed as well as some great sale priced artwork. Artwork is a great one of a kind Christmas gift.
Another one of my fun-to-paint animals. It has been a long time and I needed this; I enjoyed every brush stroke of it :-)
I also want to thank everyone that came out to the Lynchburg Art Festival last weekend. I appreciated all who stopped by, love to see past attendees and meet new ones.
It's time again for the Lynchburg Art Festival at EC Glass High School in Lynchburg. It starts at 10 AM and ends at 4 PM. This year is one of the largest with 142 artists showing their work. It's one of the nicest shows in the area. Hope to see you there, love seeing previous attendees and meeting new ones.
The Blue Ridge Mountains and the farms that are in the valleys provide a bounty of subject matter to paint. This one was a challenge with all the spring greens.
This is a view from one of my favorite places to vacation, Cadillac Mountain in Bar Harbour, Maine. The views are fantastic, whether from the top of the mountain or from the rocky cliffs that overlook the Atlantic Ocean.
This is LaFox, a cat I have painted a couple of times before, he is so much fun to paint; the eyes especially; he was so focused on watching the birds. This one is a commission for a dear friend of mine.
This is a plein air painting I did at Sonenberg Gardens while at beautiful Canandaigua Lake in New York State. It was done at a plein air workshop taught by Steven Doherty, editor of Plein Air Magazine. It was a great workshop and I was totally out of my comfort zone; but I have so wanted to be a plein air painter. Now I know I have a lot to learn and a long way to go; but it sure was fun.
This is a painting of the Roanoke River portion of Smith Mountain Lake. I love to find different views of SML and when I spotted this view while out for a ride one day, I couldn't resist painting it. This lake has such an irregular shape with many coves; it always surprises me when I find an area that I don't expect to see the lake and there it is.
Being brought up on a farm this is a familiar sight. Guess it's true you can't take the farm out of the girl:) But it was fun to paint, as are most of the animals I do.
This is a busy time of year for these little blue birds. Our bird houses are a busy place with nest building and guarding the nest; soon we'll be hearing the sounds of baby birds.
This is Cassie, a Maine Coon Cat. She was a commission for a very dear friend of mine. I did the painting a couple months ago, but because it was a gift I couldn't post it. I am so thankful for the opportunity to do this painting. That long fluffy hair and colorful fur was so much fun to paint.
I can almost feel and smell the freshness of the air after a storm has passed through; the sun always seems so much brighter when part of the sky is still heavy with storm clouds. I couldn't resist painting this with those wonderful cast shadows of the trees and sun hitting the stone buildings.
Another fun animal, giraffe's show so much character and expression; especially those big brown eyes. They have become one of my favorite animals to paint. I'm sure Belle won't be the last! :)
Well, my only excuse for not having posted is that life has just got in my way, although I have been painting a commission that I will post later, since it is a gift. I couldn't resist painting this donkey; I love animals with an attitude.
Even the last days of autumn are beautiful in Virginia. The day I took this photo was such a gloomy day until you looked at the last of the colors on the trees. The golds and oranges just glowed against the gray skies. This is a view of Sharp Top Mountain from the Peaks of Otter Lodge in Bedford.
Happy New Year everyone; I hope everyone has a healthy and happy 2016. Whenever I don't know what to paint a bird or other animal becomes the next painting. They are just a fun and relaxing subject.
A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone from Moneta, VA. Thank you to all who have visited my blog and all the encouraging comments I have received this past year. I'll resume posting my art in January.
